Ethical fashion takes centre stage

BRISTOL – [07.01.10] This year’s Fairwear Fashion Show 2010 is expected to be the biggest Fairtrade Fashion Show ever to take place in the UK.

Endorsed by the Fairtrade Foundation and the Ethical Fashion Forum, the Fairwear Fashion Show will take place in Bristol at the city’s 15th Century Cathedral, and will feature two shows - an afternoon and evening performance - on 25th February 2010.

Since the creation of the Fairwear brand, the Fairwear Fashion Show has firmly established itself as an important regular fixture in the UK fashion calendar. All Fairwear fashion houses use certified Fairtrade cotton or are members of the World Fair Trade Organisation (WFTO).

As more and more people become aware of the benefits of Fairtrade, many industry leaders, designers, artists, actors and musicians are also joining the cause to promote change in the fashion industry. Retail giants such as Laura Ashley and Debenhams, which will be showcasing its 5G range, will be present at the show, which will also feature Olympic gold medallist Sir Steve Redgrave whose designs use Fairtrade cotton from Mali. Further celebrity endorsements will include a show featuring actress Emma Watson‘s new fashion collection that she has created in conjunction with leading fairtrade design brand, People Tree while the whole event will be presented by UK actor James Redmond.

“I wanted to help People Tree produce a younger range because I was excited by the idea of using fashion as a tool to alleviate poverty and knew it was something I could help make a difference with,” said Watson.

Also appearing will be fashion students from nearby Filton College who will show that even at the early stage of their design careers, they are involved in the ever growing debate about ethical fashion. Filton students have been asked once again to design a collection which will be showcased at the show catwalk and are also creating a two minute advert on fairtrade fashion which will be shown at the event.
